I've only replaced head gaskets once before on my 93 Explorer. In that case I replaced the heads rather than taking a chance on cracks or warps. So I never had to deal with a machine shop.
I'm really stuck here with this machine shop thing and could use some recommendations on what to do next:
Do I need to take out the valves before taking the heads to a machine shop?
Do I need to worry about where I go?
Do I need to ask for something specific or just say I want Magnafluxing and checking for flatness? "You can take off up to 0.008 but not make the heads any thinner than 3.74 inches"
Should this cost a bunch of money?
Kind of stuck at this point with the heads. It appears that I've got plenty to do with pulling the HPOP and cleaning the turbo, but this head flatness and crack check has me really halted.....
I would really appreciate some guidance here...
