New guy...HI! DPF/EGR cooler questions...

Hi all. My name is Ray. While I am new to this forum, I've owned a powerstroke for years. I had an '01 F250 Platinum Edition I bought off eBay in 2006 and flew from Gainesville, Florida to Dallas, Texas to drive it home. I loved that truck but thanks to burning through transmissions quicker than toilet paper, I decided to leave trucks alone for a bit and traded it off for a Pro Street Cobra. I bought an Infiniti G37 and drove it a couple of years til this week when I decided I really had to have another truck. This week I purchased a 2008 Harley F250 CC 6.4. Under a 100k miles and got it at an auction for a steal. It came with 6" of Rancho lift, riding on Fuel Krank's 20" rims with 35/13.50r20lt Mickey Thompsons. The tires are crazy loud so I ordered some Toyo AT2's today and they'll be installed Monday. When I first drove the truck, I immediately recognized it was tuned, thanks to the plume of soot that billowed out of the exhaust when I launched.

While I was at a local 4x4 shop today looking at his tires, he asked me if the DPF delete had been done already. I didn't know so I popped the hood and let him have a look. I was ignorant to the DPF/EGR cooler stuff because this was not something that was an issue with my '01. He pointed out a few things. First, an open element cold air intake, some other custom stuff, and that the DPF and EGR cooler had been deleted. I then explained that the truck was obviously tuned because of the power/smoke but that the tuner or module was not sold with the truck. I explained that it was my intention to order a SCT Livewire tuner so I could install a known program and do make a couple of changes. He immediately said that if I tried to install another tune, the next time I drove it, it would be attached to a tow rope because it would not run. He said because the DPF delete had already been done, and there was an unknown tune in it, I am stuck with what I have. I asked about just taking it to Ford to have the stock firmware flashed and that is when he told me to avoid the dealership at all costs, as the DPF delete business is apparently illegal AND that the same rule applies to them messing with the software: it would be towed home. All that said, he also said he has two 6.4ls of his own and both have the same things done and he wouldn't own them any other way, as it is the only was to save the turbo/motor from cooler problems and increase mileage. He said the only tuner out there that you can get that supports DPF delete is the MiniMaxx which is almost $2k.

All of this is new news to me. So, I suppose I am looking to learn about all of this. I have searched the forums and now have a grasp on what the DPF/EGR stuff does and why the EPA isn't happy about the deletions of the DPF. But, I am in a quandry because I now own the truck and have to make do with what I bought. I love the truck, it is a beauty and fun to drive. Plus, being back in a Powerstroke is heaven. I guess what I am asking is, does all of that sound legit? Am I stuck with this unknown tune and have no way to change it out? The DiabloSport Predator programmer I had for my '01 would remove and store the "stock" tune and replace it with their's. I see some other tuners (like the Livewire, which is about $600) claims to support DPF delete....

I apologize for the lengthy first post to ask such a litany of questions but I simply couldn't find another post that had any similarities. Thanks all!

Ray
