Wheel studs stripping question

Hello all: I am having another problem/question. Recently had a flat tire. took it off and brought in for repair. Noticed when I put the spare tire on I had a little difficulty with one of the lug nuts. Not cross threaded but binding up. I was putting them on with a ratcheting torque wrench so I noticed this more so than if air gunning it. When it came time to r & r the spare tire with the repaired tire, I borrowed a air impact drill. Off came all the nuts but that one dragged off HARD all the way. As you might imagine, It went on even harder & it finally had enough and stripped when I got it tightened down. Had to replace the stud (what a PITA). Decided I did not care for the studs sticking out in the elements of rain/dirt/salt... and thought it would be a better idea to get some nice closed end extended length lugs (McGuard brand). Now I also no that you are NOT (supposed) to be putting anti seize or WD 40 or anything else on lug nuts as you will not get the proper torque. I hear lots of guys saying they do it and no problem... But a torque rating is established on a clean, dry good condition (new) thread. What gets me is that when I put my tire back on (even after replacing the one stud I ruined, And using the new (high quality) lugs. A different stud/Lug did the same nonsense! Started on pretty good, At least 5 or 8 turns, Then started getting stiff. I backed it off, Still stiff but loosened a bit. Furthered it more on, went further but stiff again! I ended up hitting it with some WD 40 just because it was getting so close to being on and I didn't dare back it off again. What the Hell is going on here!!!??? I know darn well the guys at the garage are not taking the time to clean off studs before they blow them off with the air drill. I doubt they take a wire brush and soap & water to them before they blow them back on. So why with all my attention to making sure they are as clean as possible am I having this problem!!!! Any imput/ideas? I hate to think I have to take it all apart again and put another new stud in. Especially at $16.42 each!! ????? Thoughts......... Tom
