1989 Ford Econoline E-350 diesel that won't start. She's had this problem for a while, but we were always able to start her by spraying starter spray into the air intake. Last time she started and ran for 30 seconds then died. Has not started since.
I recharged the batteries and had a mechanic look at it. He guessed it was fuel pump not working. Fuel pump makes no noise upon ignition.
If it is the fuel pump, he suggested we could put an external pump outside the tank and just attach it to the existing lines, rather than pulling the tank off and fully replacing the pump. Is that a viable option?
Could it be something other than the pump, like a solenoid or a fuse (I haven't checked yet) or low oil or something that would have a similar effect.
