Hi all - I've had a dodge forever and finally got rid of it got a 1984 3/4 ton 2wd Ford 6.9. I really like it but I need to tell you a story.
I bought it and its got pretty low mileage. 88k. The person i got it from said it got used very little but the fuel was relatively new and it started up cold so I went ahead and bought it.
She said one thing that seemed odd and I guess since I am stupid, I didn't listen to her advice. She said she never go below a 1/4 of a tank on the truck. She didn't say why but I guess I had to test her.
I've had the truck for about 2 months and it runs great. Then I got below a 1/4 of a tank and it died. Like fuel starvation. Then it started up and went a little ways and died again. It always starts after about 20 seconds then goes again for a few minutes and dies.
Its worse in the afternoon when its warmer (air expansion?).
Then I read somewhere on here that these tank fuel pick up tubes have some sort of plastic tip that degrades. The go away and the tube is then suspended higher up (just below a 1/4 tank).
Well I guess I learned to listen to her the hard way and I suspect I have air in my line.
What do you think?
And, I have the aftermarket water separator installed already but have never drained it. She didn't know how either as it was her husbands truck. If you think this is air, what is the best way to go about getting it out of the fuel system?
She is all stock except for the separator. It seems to be a little hard of fuel but I haven't really tested it. Again, it ran great before and good in between these fuel shortages. I recently changed the oil and it seems to have strong coolant so I didn't change it. No leaks on top of the motor and nothing dripping below. It starts with a bit of black smoke but that goes away in seconds.
Thanks for your help if possible.
Frank
