Hey guys
Just joined up here. Need help solving an issue. Picked up an 86 f250 yesterday 4 speed manual trans. Thing was already up and running when i got it, drove it around etc. Ended up driving it about 2 hours home. Ran decent the whole way back, did feel like it had some surging going on at certain points (Like all of a sudden it would just speed up a bunch more). Anyways got it home, parked it.
Today when i went to start it up after work, saw that the glow plug light doesn't come on. Also when i turn the ignition to what would assumably be accessory, no dash lights come on. And then when i turn it over to where it would be that i crank it at but leave my foot off the clutch, the little water in fuel and whatever the other light is underneath that that are below the glow plug light, lights up. But the glow plug light doesn't. Then when i try to start it it cranks over what seems perfectly but doesn't start at all. (It was also very hot today so I'm not sure if it still means the glow plugs have to come on or not)
Did a small bit of research and tried using a test light with one end to the battery ground and the other on the glow plug relay terminals, neither showed power. Tried a jumper from the positive to the post that the purple wire hooks to on the glow plug relay, still wouldn't start.
Went to the back of the motor, used the test light to find that the plug going to the glow plug controller had power but nothing lit up when we tested from the controller itself.
Also tried to use a little ether to start it (I'm talking 2 1/4 second sprays) and didn't start but did actually try to.
We cracked the fuel filter open and looked inside and it was maybe a 1/4 full of fuel. Filled it up and still didn't start but it may not if theres air in the lines I'm not sure.
I believe thats all, I know its a lot.
Short version: Test light showed no power at glow plug controller or relay. Fuel filter was only 1/4 full when cracked open to look. Ignition seems off.
Thanks,
Ben
