Best Way to Clean the whole engine/ bay

I've got an 86 6.9L that at some point in the last 5-10 years has had a leak from almost everywhere possible. I currently have the heads off and sent out, and figured while they are being worked on, I should clean up the engine bay and engine of all this grease. Most of the leaks will be fixed (all should be, but a recent repair to the rear seal may not have been so great; go figure I had a shop do it), so why not make it look good, and be easier to work on. Two problems. One is that, with the truck in its current location, I do not have access to a water hose. Not allowed in this diy shop due to environmental reasons. Second, I dont really want to spray water all around the open block anyway.

I have heard diesel fuel is great for cleaning the actual head mating surfaces themselves; any tips here are appreciated. Also any tips for cleaning everything else.
