I first want to thank this forum for all the opinions, advice, and diagnostic ideas. This is not the first time either, but this site has saved me a barrel of cash.
Here's what I thought happened:
What really happened:
So all in all, I was down 2.5 weeks of use of my vehicle, but I only spent:
but I've learned a lot, and I once again love my truck.

Here's what I thought happened:
- Had a hard-start, died at idle condition
- Checked ficm voltate... found 20V during ignition
- re-soldered ficm, could not start
- discovered I had run out of diesel during diagnosing the problem
- got running, was obviously running on 7 cylinders.
- Sent ficm to ficmrepair.com
- diagnosis showed fully working ficm, but had "bad" software that kills ficms.
- ordered economy tune.
What really happened:
- Had a hard-start, died at idle condition
- Checked ficm voltate... found 20V during ignition
- re-soldered ficm, idiot mechanic (me) ran out of diesel
- got running, was obviously running on 7 cylinders.
- Sent ficm to ficmrepair.com
- diagnosis showed fully working ficm, but had "bad" software that kills ficms.
- ordered economy tune.
- while re-installing found idiot mechanic (me) had knocked injector #6 connector off while either removing or re-installing the ficm during the first issue.
- Reconnected the harness.... all works great.
So all in all, I was down 2.5 weeks of use of my vehicle, but I only spent:
- $65 for ficmrepair.com diagnosis (worth it now that it's done)
- $150 for economy tune (worth it, even though I would never have done it had I not caused my last problem)
- $130 for a ScanGaugeII (new toy, will be fun to use it once I find time to program it
- $60 on new fuel filters that it needed anyway
- $85 on a new "lower" coolant overflow hose that broke when removing the de-gas bottle.
- $50 in beer (at least) during intense diagnosis sessions.
but I've learned a lot, and I once again love my truck.
Cheers.
