Tailgate with step option heavy

I was closing my tailgate and heard what sounded like a spring breaking loose. When I opened the tailgate again, it felt very heavy.
Is there a spring of some sort in there that is supposed to assist in raising and lowering the tailgate? If so, how is it accessed?
