Dirty fuel filter??

I have a 2000 f350 7.3 diesel and had trouble getting her home today. The truck sputtered , stalled and shut off all the way home. I had to put her in neutral and rev her up at stop lights to keep her on. She ran fine until today and I also noticed the "check engine" light was on. Thinking it might be the fuel filter. What do you guys think? Is the filter located over the engine and the in tank screen the only two filters in this truck? How difficult is it to get to that screen? Tank removal?Do you recommend motor craft filters to replace the one over the engine or are the auto parts store filters okay to use? Thanks in advance!
