International VT365 Coolant Filter Cut Open

My motorhome is an International chassis and has the VT365 engine. I think most everyone knows this is International's version of the Ford 6.0 Powerstroke engine.

One thing that International does different is a factory coolant filter, bypass style just like many of you add to your 6.0's. Another major difference is the coolant is the red ELC type, or more common known as CAT-EC1 specification.

I have 25K miles on the motorhome and thought good time to change the coolant filter when i was doing the oil, transmission and fuel filters. Not sure what to expect, and knowing how ugly some of your coolant filters have looked, I cut it open. Used a cut-off wheel right by the seam. Easy to cut and tried to keep it from contaminating the results.

My results show just some fine sand particles. No silicone-like gel crap. Not even what I would call excessive sand, but there certainly was some, bigger pieces down at the bottom of the can, and the finer pieces ion the filter element. I think the big difference is the coolant type. That Ford gold coolant is crap - based on my results, switch to the EC-1 spec coolant.

The filter was a Fleetguard WF2077, and I will say a few comments about the filter construction. Nice made, had a substantial end plate where it threads on and the seal is. Good glue holding the filter element, which was paper. No holes or ways for stuff to bypass the element. It had a short coil spring on the end, with a nylon cup washer at the end of the can to hold the element against the base plate. Nice internal baffle to support the element from crushing. Overall quite impressed with the construction. Now the pics, pretty self-explanatory.
