transmission failure

my wife was hauling the horses up a steep canyon road and she noticed burning smell so stopped and saw transmission fluid pouring out from the breather hole at the front of the transmission. I don't an external temp gauge so not sure how hot it was but she reported the dash gauge was "in the middle". she turned the truck off and after a couple hours I arrived on scene. I added about 10 quarts of fluid and moved it off the road into a safer place (moved it about 50 ft). It dripped a little fluid as I was moving it but not spewing as before. I am going to haul it home but it's a in a tight steep canyon and getting a 20ft flatbed trailer up there could prove to be challenging. would it be safe to just coast in neutral down the hill to the pavement (about 1/2 mile) where I can more easily load it onto the trailer? if it is just the seal I don't want to risk damaging the transmission if I don't have to. truck has 150k miles. no trans issues to date.
