Well, truck bit the dust again. I was driving up a moderate hill to by-pass some road construction and when I went from 1st to 2nd at about 3000 rpm, something went bang in the engine compartment and I heard a noise that sounded like something caught in the turbo. I just got my truck back from the dealer last week with a rebuilt turbo, so I thought here we go again.
I had it towed in and the found it had a failed oil pump. It looked pretty well destroyed to me, several cracks and a missing chunk of the gear. The upshot of it is I now need a new short block to tune of $11k (parts and labor, they quoted me a little over $6k for the short block). I wish it was the turbo!
I bought this truck used with 36k on it and it now has 122k. I do all the required maint on it and just added the tuner along with the egr delete about 3 months ago. Hard to fathom just what could have caused this, especially since the dealer said they had never seen anything like this before.
Now the question is do I put the short block in or get rid of the truck? We are not in a position to get a new (or newer truck) in the near future and we need a truck capable of pulling a 14K fifth wheel. I have no idea what I can get out of the truck with a bad engine, but I know I will take a big hit on it. However, what's in our price range right now will not be any better than what I have now if I go the short block route. Used diesel trucks are hard to come by around here right now and anyway, I'm a little leery of buying a used diesel again.
Oh yeah, the dealer did quote me $9k for a used engine with 120K on it, 1 year warranty, parts and labor, but there again, how do you know what you're getting? I'm just thankful I'm wasn't 800 miles from home with my camper like the last time this happened!
I would appriciate any thoughts on this.
Thanks
