Transfer case shifting by itself -Stuck in low

Last week I was leaving town for a job. I fueled up and leaving the station I heard a gear grinding noise and the 4 high light was flashing on the dash. I thought I must have bumped the switch accidentaly. I did the usual step on the brake and moved the switch and it went back to 2WD. The trip was 125 miles no problem untill at 75 miles I stopped to check the load. 4high flashing. did the same to clear no other problems. The truck was on the jobsite for one week no driving. when I went to leave it did the 4 high and now 4 low as well. this time it was not as easy to get it back into 2WD I tried neutral - Backup 10 ft multiple times it finally came back to 2WD . After 10 miles on the freeway at 55 mph the transfer case jumped into neutral with a bad gear grinding noise. I put it in neutral and did the usual to get it back in 2WD. It took 20 mins or so. I was still 120 miles from home. It went ok for another 50 miles and did it again. I pulled in a parking lot and played with the transfer case shift motor (ESOF) I gould hear a click or two with the motor off. It finally went back to 2WD and I made it back. I pulled the Transfer shift motor off and it did nothing with power applied to it. I manually shifted the transfer case but now it clunks in and out of gear much over 5 mph.

I checked all the vacuum lines to the front hubs - all ok. The vacuum pump does not work that I could see with the key on - engine off.

any help is appreciated
