1997 Ford F-350 7.3 Turbo Overdrive light blinking

Hi to all you ford diesel owners out there. Have a problem with my 1997 F-350 7.3 turbo diesel xlt dump truck. I have read a lot of info on the problem I'm having but would like some input by someone who has the knowledge of the E04D trannys. First of all, I intend to bring the truck in to get a code reading. With that being said, I am looking for folks with similar problems that have been through this, or professional opinions. I recently obtained the truck about 10 months ago, it is 4 wheel drive and has a plow. I towed a few times and plowed half a dozen times, very few miles. Here is what I have tried so far;
1) left trailer brake light did not work- replaced fuse- aok
2) 3rd brake light burnt-replaced bulb-pulled #9 relay to reset system-ok for about 2 miles and blinking returned. Drove good when not blinking. Shifted harder when blinking returned.
3) switched #1 relay with #3 relay-no change
4) discovered very loose battery cable-tightened it up-disconnected both batteries and reconnected-blinking stopped and truck shifted smooth for again about 2 miles when the blinking returned.
5) speedometer works
6) brake lights work(all three)
Transmission fluid has not been changed but fluid is now at proper level. Early in the winter, lost about 2 qts through the front seal but immediately replaced it, with no blinking light thereafter. Towed a ford ranger about 25 miles when the blinking light first appeared.As I stated earlier, I have already made an appointment to get it checked out but would like to know why, when I reset the system and the OD stops blinking, it runs smooth, when blinking, shifts hard. Doesn't sound like an internal tranny issue but maybe an electrical issue? Any thoughts are welcome but don't say, time for a new truck!
