So I'm at it again...my 4 year old tranny with 88k miles on it bit the dust a week ago. Mind you that tranny set me back about $3500 on it and was brand spankin new with an upgraded valve body and billet triple disc converter. The company I bought it through, revmax performance, said they would go through and rebuild it for $1000. While that seems like a decent price...I have to mess around with paying someone to help me R & R it, plus new fluid, and getting it to North Carolina where their shop it...I'm sick of dealing with this out of state crap and I've decided I'm just going to have my local shop rebuild it for me. I talked with a very nice guy today that really sounded knowledgable and he told me without knowing the extent of the damage a rebuild would set me back $2000-2500 with him. I could hear my wallet scream when he said that, but if you stop and think about it I'm really not spending that much more when you factor in all the crap I have to go through to get the tranny to NC.
I wanted to bounce a few things off of you guys that I talked about with my local guy because I got a few different bits of info from him as opposed revmax.
My local guy said I should get a whole new converter to eliminate the chances of fragments working their way back into the newly rebuilt tranny. Revmax said the converter is post-filter and shouldn't need replacing but for an extra $125 they would inspect it to make sure it's ok. I would like to maintain a billet multi disc converter and not go back to stock. The local guy said for another $100 bucks or so he would put in a multi-disc billet converter for me.
Next, my local guy said I need a whole new tranny cooler. I've already upgraded to the 6.0 cooler and really don't wanna drop another 300+ on a new one. He said he would put on a trucool cooler for another $100 or so. My question to you guys is, can't I just keep the 6.0 cooler I have and install an external filtration system, such as this? Tranny Filtration
That way if there are any metal fragments in the cooler they will eventually flush out and get caught within the filter.
Any other little tid bits you guys can throw my way would be greatly appreciated.
Let this all be a lesson to you guys....Don't cheap out and always go with BTS the first time around! :-P
