Hello to all,
This is my first post to any forum. I am a parts professional at a Dealership in the P.A.C. I spend 95% of my work day on various computer systems and a phone that never stops ringing. So… I do not spend much if any of my personal time on the internet, Facebook ect… I am posting this as a GIANT THANK YOU to all of the great people I have come in contact with over the past couple of years and I wanted it to reach as many people as possible. So begins my journey.
I have wanted to own a Diesel truck from the time I was 18. (1992) My very fist experience was working in drywall with my best friends dad. He had purchased a brand new 1992 Chevrolet 6.5L Turbo. That rig sparked my interest and as I got to drive it pulling various loads I began to appreciate the diesel’s capability. I also always wanted a “Big Truck”. A couple years later I purchased a 1984 Chevy Suburban with a 6.2L with the big dream of putting a crate 6.5L in it. Well it popped a head gasket right after I bought it and I had no work so it got sold.
Now I was born and raised to become a Ford man but I had got a deal on the Suburban from a friend so that was where I started. After the Suburban I looked around and tried to acquire 92-93 7.3L but as they were only a few years old I just could not afford it. So I waited and hoped and dreamed. I did loads of research and became obsessed with Diesel Tech. Ford coming out with the Super Duty in 1998 and the Power Stroke D.I. was what I wanted to be driving.
Long story a little longer life and women taking their routs the stars aligned and I was able to make my dreams come true in 2008 with the purchase of my 2002 F350 XLT 4x4 Dually 7.3L Crew Cab with 91k on the clock. Well my dream shortly turned into a long road of blood, sweat and tears. My rig had a reman Jasper 7.3L running complete installed at 87,778 miles. This made me hesitant to buy from the start. But I made quite a few calls to friends in the industry and did some research and Jasper has a good reputation and the engine was still under their warranty for 12k miles and being emotional about the rig (bad on my part) and knowing the dealer personally (getting one hell of a deal with a trade in) I bought her. The dream was fantastic for about 6 months when the injector cups failed (102k miles). I thought for sure that I had lost a head gasket and engine replacement was imminent. After calls to Jasper to find out that injector cups are considered part of the fuel system and were not covered by the warranty.
This is where the GIANT THANK YOU comes in. I Googled fuel in coolant recovery tank and immediately hundreds of posts came up from forum after forum and I realized that the issues my not be as serious as I had thought. So THANK YOU to ALL who have posted their experiences and tips on countless repairs! Being mechanically competent I started to dig into the procedure for repairs. 10-15hrs of cab/head removal was not an option. In my search I found Rosewood Diesel Shop had an in rig cup R&R tool. After a quick call to Jim Rose (Great guy!! THANK YOU!!) I had my tools and cups ordered. From all of my research I decided upgrade to the Stealth SRP1 as well since I was there and my pump was leaking. I also did a crossover tube, cold air intake (witch I built) and Wicked Wheel upgrade.
As my repair channels consisted of dealer based labor systems I did not have good reference for the injector cup service procedure. That is when I found PowerstrokeHelp.com and Mr. Bill Hewitt. This is another GIANT THANK YOU!!! I watched all of Mr. Hewitt’s video’s and called his shop to ask his opinion on the best sealer to use on the cups as some stated red and some stated green. Not expecting a call from Mr. Hewitt himself 20min later Bill called me directly and spent 20-30min. on the phone with me expressing his frustration with the same issue he has had with Jasper remans. He not once tried to push any of his agenda or sell me anything. He just talked with me like a fellow tech. What AMAZING FREE support and respect!!
All was great till last July at appx. 132k miles when she died on me pulling my fifth wheel a 100 miles from home. Fortunately it happened in front of Integrity in General Auto Repair on West 11th in Eugene, OR. What an outstanding shop and shop owner!!!! He and his son came right out hooked up a scan tool then towed me across the street to a big parking lot. There he spent hours in diag back and forth to his shop we threw an I.P.R. valve at it and a C.P.S. I had in the glove box. No luck. When I tried to pay him he said I didn’t fix it no charge. WHAT!!!?? Who does that. I said I owe you at least for the parts. When I went to pay him all I had was a debit card he said sorry cash or check only. Don’t worry about it. I will give to an invoice just mail me a check. AGAIN WHAT!!!??? THANK YOU!!!! Who does that now a days? Couple weeks later my I asked my father to take the cash down in person. Tried to give him $400.00 bucks. (min. 4hrs diag, tow and $219.00 I.P.R.) he said no only took $219.00
On further diag I found the SRP 1 had an internal failure. Having the first gen SRP 1 with a one year warranty I figured I was S.O.L. I called Mr. Rose and asked his opinion and he told me Gary at Stecher Performance is a stand up guy and believes in his product give him a call and I can talk to him too if you want. So I call Gary expecting to have to buy a whole pump. Gary admitted they had some issues in the first gen pumps but they have been corrected and he would upgrade my pump to an SRP1.1 with a lifetime warranty for the cost of parts. THANKS GARY!!!! It took a little time but he is a man of his word and a stand up guy!!!
I have done some more upgrades. Up pipes, pushrods, intake ect… She will be back on the road again soon and I will be living the dream once again.
