I have read up on this from searches on the forum and it appears I can do this.
I have a project truck F350 lariat 1990 IDI ATS turbo crew dually 2wd 5 speed manual trans C axle D5 290k miles and engine dead (got it just barely running, coolant is disappearing) bought it for the body a few years back with finding engine in mind. Body and interior very nice shape.
I have a neighbor 1/2 mile away who I have know for 15 years is a reputable person who has 1986 4WD standard cab ATS turbo IDI (4 or 5 speed can not remember) with 134k miles starts easily even right now with just one battery. His father in-law owned it before him so he is sure of the milage. The outside of the truck the paint is a rust bucket (salt air, hot sun) interior is also real bad from sun. I test drove it yesterday and the steering is real tight, brakes good, engine compartment real clean, hoses and all very good condition. Because he has 2 other cars the truck was only driven about 1-2k miles a year the last 20 years, all trips were 15-30 miles one way trips during that time maybe every 1-2 weeks 5% city 95% highway. Fluids all looked good. Didn't quiz him on cavitation prevention issues, just assumed no one knows.
I live in baja MX so gas mechanics are available for low prices. They specialize down here in old school ford trucks. Straight swap out should be about $300.00.
I have been looking for a engine for my 1990 crew for 3 years since I bought the project truck. Price of this truck is under 1k.
What I have not been able to be clear about in reading discussions is the transmission issue, engine is clear. Because this one was 4wd i assume that does not matter, if I use it for just going to 2wd, that I can just go straight off the transmission. without a transfer case. IE it would be in line with the rear wheel drive perfectly?
Alternatively can I, (because brute force labor is so cheap, and i live in a beach area sand launching of boats) make my 2wd dually into a 4wd dually just with the parts from the two of them if the gear ratios match? If not do I then only need to find a 4wd dully rear end with the same gear ratio or not? Welding cutting shafts and such is an easy low cost thing here if not in a rush. So can I just end up with a slightly lower weight capacity and having to carry two types of spare rims is my hope?
I do a cold start test on it Sunday. So if no major concerns will pick it up sometime next week. And begin the process sometime this summer.
Both the glow plug systems work, I have read people keep the glow plug from the 7.3IDI, is that the only thing I may make sure I use from the newer one. Both have non usable AC that I will need to fix.
