2013 f350 dually 4x4
replaced front brakes and rotors monday. i pull a 10k trailer with electric over hydraulic brakes and usually 5k to 18k load. so the factory trailer brake system has a big delay, even with ratio all the way up, and my front brakes went metal to metal pretty fast.
34 years as a mechanic but last 12 years at lexus and previous 11 or 12 years engine diagnostic only, so it has been years since any 4x4 repairs or maint etc... my last 4x4 stuff was remove mechanism and remove nuts and bearings etc. so i pulled actuator and see no nut. found that you just pull 8 nuts and used a dead blow hammer to remove hub to wheel adapter. replaced rotors and brake pads, reinstalled 4x4 actuator.
test drove and all ok. noticed today, 1600 miles later i hear a grinding/roaring type noise 2 to 10 mph when turning and accelerating or coasting, not braking or not going straight anytime. i also did a 30 mph swerve back and forth to load and unload front bearings to see if it was that but no noise. looked over both front brake assy's to see if something came loose or looked odd, nothing. i pulled off the 4x4 actuator and test drove to see if i damaged something in it when i pulled it off during initial inspection. test drove with it off and it still made noise.
i have 67k on it and even though i rotated tires 5 times now the tires on front in the last 10k have chopped on outer edges pretty badly. dealing with chopped tire noises with lexus it did not go away at speed, this does and has no noise going straight. i am also getting steering shake when i hit a bump and have ordered a new rancho steering stabilizer to replace factory one.
maybe i'm freaking but i dont want to have issues on the road, i put 3k on every week. am i missing something? will the chopped tires on a 4x4 with a straight axle make that much noise in turning only?
