The other night on the way home my truck died (2000 F350 -It is stock as far as I know). It turns over but will not fire. There were some symptoms and I knew something was coming...
Symptoms were that the truck would intermittently lose power. I would take my foot off of the accelerator pedal and tap it a few times. Then it would gain power back. I thought it was the little micro switch at the top of the pedal since I know it is going bad.
So back to what happened. It died in the tunnel heading West on hwy 26 in Portland, OR (If you know where I am talking about you know that is a bad place for a breakdown). I was able to coast just out of the tunnel and get pulled over out of traffic.
Once safe, I tried to start it and it would turn over but wouldn't start. I usually hear a few noises when turning the key over like the fuel pump and what I think it the GP relay. It didn't sound like the fuel pump was pumping but I wasn't sure and had no way to check without some help.
Here is where I get stupid. I figure it is the micro switch on the pedal assembly, so the rocket scientist in me pulls the wire off the switch, shorts across it and tries to start it. Well I shorted across it and the little metal bar for the dash cover that covers the fuse box and I see a spark. I know stupid stupid stupid. I figure I had better stop and get a tow to the dealer.
Dealer wanted $120 to pull codes. I agreed. They call the next day and say they can't pull codes and want to know if I have a program or a chip in it. I don't but I am the third owner so I don't know for sure. They want $360 to pull the fender off to get to the PCM (edit…maybe the idm). That seems odd to me.
After the "fog" of being stuck on the side of the road wore off and I think about it I am pretty sure it is a fuel delivery issue. They guy at the dealer told me the mechanic though the same thing but had to follow procedure. I said bull, I will come get it.
So, I can check the fuses and the pump when I get home. Assuming that is it I can change it out or figure out the power issue and am good to go.
Should I worry about anything else since I shorted out that micro switch...like a total dumbass??? I am worried about the PCM or maybe even something else. Come to think of it, I think the bells stopped dinging after that too. Oh, I read in another thread that the cigarette lighter and the PCM are on the same fuse somewhere along the way. I do have power to the cigarette lighter...if that helps.
Thank you!
